CNBP makes mark at APNFO10

The 10th Asia-Pacific Conference on Near-field Optics (APNFO10), held July 7-10 2015 in Japan, saw significant CNBP representation and visibility.

Two Centre Chief Investigators gave invited talks:

Dayong Jin (University of Technology, Sydney) – Upconversion SuperDots for Nanoscale Biophotonics. 

Brant Gibson (RMIT University) – Nanodiamonds: Hybrid-Photonic and BioPhotonic applications.

CNBP PhD student Wan Aizuddin Wan Razali (pictured) also won the IAC Award at  APNFO10 for top Student Oral with Poster presentation. His topic – “Ultrasensitive Nanoruby Imaging using Time gated Luminescence Microscopy.”

Newest CNBP recruit publishes in Nature Photonics

Our newest CNBP recruit, Dr Martin Ploschner, has just been published in the prestigious journal Nature Photonics.

The research, titled “Seeing through chaos in multimode fibres” is a study from his previous role at the University of Dundee and could open up a new era of superfast communications technology and lead to breakthroughs in the treatment of medical conditions.

Chapter on solid-binding peptides to be published

CNBP researchers feature in the publication of an exciting new book chapter, highlighting the use of solid-binding peptides in the immobilisation of enzymes onto solid materials for applications in biotechnology.

To be published  in the Springer book series “Grand Challenges in Biology and Biotechnology”, the chapter is titled ‘Solid-Binding Peptides: New Immobilisation Strategies for Extremophile Biocatalysis in Biotechnology’.

Partners with Peking University

CNBP Launch1_1_web13 July, 2015

The Centre for Nanoscale BioPhotonics (CNBP) and Peking University cemented ties in a partnership launch and associated workshop, that took place in Beijing, China on Monday 13th July, 2015.

Launch activities included introductions, organisational overviews, as well as a hosted tour and lunch, facilitating engagement and discussion between CNBP and Peking University attendees. A specific highlight was the Cyrstal Ball Ceremony, in which the CNBP-Peking University partnership was prominently displayed on a revolving LED screen.

Following launch proceedings, an afternoon of alternating science seminars was then undertaken by both Peking University and CNBP researchers. Science discussions continued throughout, opening up invitations for lab tours the following day and alignment of projects to move jointly forward with.

CNBP Director Mark Hutchinson was upbeat following the launch, noting the continued strong engagement with Peking University in providing students to nodes of the CNBP. He also emphasized CNBP connection and establishment of new relationships with new Professors within the Institute of Molecular Medicine at Peking University and Peking College of Chemistry.

Other areas of discussion at the launch included potential collaboration of science projects and mutual agreement  to participate in joint funding opportunities. Also proposed, was a further CNBP visit to Peking, or alternatively, another nanophotonics workshop to be held in Australia at one of CNBP’s University nodes.

In summing up the partner launch activity, Prof Hutchinson noted that CNBP’s visit was extremely well received and had secured CNBP’s partnership with the Peking University for the term of the Centre and beyond.

CNBP researchers visit IPHT Jena

IPHT visit13 July 2015:

From the 28th of June to the 3rd of July, Dr Georgios Tsiminis and Dr Erik Schartner from the Adelaide node of the CNBP visited the Institute of Photonic Technology (IPHT) in Jena, Germany, as part of a longer trip that also included oral presentations at the CLEO Europe 2015 International Conference and company visits throughout Germany.

The two CNBP members gave a seminar to the Fiber Optics work on their recent work on comparing different fluorescence optical fibre sensors (Dr Tsiminis) and on optical fibre thermometry for in vivo applications (Dr Schartner), followed by a lab tour of the IPHT fibre fabrication facility and measurement laboratories. They also met up with another CNBP researcher, Dr Herbert Foo, who is on a long-term visit in Jena working on advanced glass-making.

The rest of this long-term visit was spent working at the laboratory of Prof. Dr Juergen Popp, IPHT, a world-renowned expert of Raman spectroscopy for sensing applications. Dr Tsiminis and Dr Schartner worked with with Dr Christian Matthaeus and Dr Sebastian Dochow from the Raman group. Their work involved gaining hands-on experience with some of the optical fibre Raman probes developed within the group and their deployment for in vivo and ex vivo measurements.

Initial experiments were conducted in bacon cuts, highlighting the difference between fat tissue and red meat in terms of their respective Raman spectra, with fat tissue showing the typical lipid Raman signature that was absent in the collagen-rich red meat part of the sample.

Further experiments were then performed inside a sample of rabbit aorta (preserved in formalin) that enabled the monitoring of fat concentration along the length of the aorta, allowing the pinpointing of areas were fat accumulates inside the blood vessel and therefore locations of possible blood narrowing, a big concern for heart disease.

The CNBP researchers also visited the Schott Glas Museum and got an overview of the early stages of high quality and precision glass making, as well as the Optischen Museum Jena, featuring the history of optic technologies through the ages.

Overall this was a very successful and enjoyeable visit to IPHT in Jena that produced the first parts of shared work and expertise with the CNBP collaborators led by Prof. Dr Juergen Popp. This initial work and fruitful discussions set the base for a future collaborative work project on using Raman spectroscopy to monitor cardiovascular health and we look forward to welcoming some of our IPHT colleagues at the CNBP retreat in November.

Kids learn photonics at CNBP Adelaide

Primary school children were given introductory talks about photonics and light by CNBP scientist Roman Kostecki at CNBP’s University of Adelaide node last week (Thu 9th July).

The talks were a part of a STEMSEL Club holiday workshop where the children were asked to design and make three photonics related devices, demonstrating interactions with light   (1) how light is guided in optical fibres, (2) the light spectrum and colour, and (3) UV light and fluorescence.

STEMSEL stands for Science Technology Engineering Maths Social Enterprise Learning. The STEMSEL clubs are an arm of the STEMSEL Foundation which is a not for profit organisation that aims to teach every child how to use technology and electronics.

 

Youth ANZAAS visits CNBP in Adelaide

CNBP researchers Roman Kostecki, Georgios Tsiminis , Mel McDowall, Peipei Jia, Erik Schartner and Tess Reynolds were happy to host a visiting Youth ANZAAS tour at their laboratories at the University of Adelaide on July 9th, 2015.

Youth ANZAAS  (organised by the Australian and New Zealand Association for the Advancement of Science)  is an annual residential international forum for science students in Years 10 to 12. Every year, students from each State and Territory are selected to participate in science activities and experiences over a period of a week.

These high achieving students with eager minds were excited to be shown around the working CNBP laboratories, and learnt more about the research that is being undertaken by the Centre, from the lectures  that each researcher provided.

A close and ongoing partnership with HUST

The Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST) and the Centre for Nanoscale BioPhotonics (CNBP), celebrated their close and ongoing relationship with a successful partner launch at the Wuhan located  University, on Wednesday July 8th, 2015.

HUST, with a long history of collaboration with individual CNBP researchers prior to recent partnership activity, formally signed up to a partnership agreement in 2014. Both organisations are now working together on a number of biophotonic projects, with arrangements in place for HUST students to work at CNBP research nodes in Australia.

Following presentations and formalities by both parties (led by Prof Shaoqun Zeng for HUST and by Centre Director Mark Hutchinson for the CNBP), open discussion took place on a number of topics including on current projects, as well as opportunities for potential future collaborations.

This was then followed by CNBP science talks and laboratory visits to the Optical Bioimaging Core Facility, the Optoelectronic Microscopy Facility and the Exhibition Hall of Wuhan National Laboratory Optoelectronics.

Feedback from the launch was extremely positive with further exploration and discussion between CNBP and HUST to take place on increased student engagement, as well as on the publication of joint papers and joint grant applications in areas of shared interest. CNBP also extended an invitation to HUST to attend its Annual Retreat in November 2015, which was positively accepted by Professor Zhihong Zhang.

Professor Hutchinson summed up proceedings noting, “The launch was a great success and provided a perfect platform for open discussion to commence with new and old contacts from both HUST and CNBP, to move collaborations and project discussion forward based on translational research.”

CNBP at International Nanomedicine Conference

PhD commendation

John Horsley Low Res Edit 01417 July 2015:

Congratulations to CNBP researcher John Horsley, who has just been awarded a Dean’s Commendation for Doctoral Thesis Excellence from the University of Adelaide.  A Commendation is awarded when all examiners consider the thesis to be ‘outstanding’.

John’s thesis, titled “The Effects of Macrocyclic Constraints on Electron Transfer in Peptides”, examined the importance of secondary structure characteristics to proteins/peptides, and its relevance to electronic transport.

Currently, John is working on synthesizing a light-driven peptide-based sensor to detect changes in ligand/receptor interactions for the CNBP.
